Laura Dance Festival - June 2011. FNQ Volunteers in partnership with Savvy Arts and the Quinkan Centre coordinated 83 fantastic volunteers over 5 days preparing for and during the Laura Dance Festival. Volunteers were involved in merchandise sales, front gate ticket box, dance group assistants, preparing and serving food for performers and volunteers, music tent and art gallery attendants. Volunteers who joined us for this wonderful cultural experience came from all over the world; France, Portugal, New Zealand, England, Canada, Israel, Germany, Ireland and of course Aussies from all over Australia. This was a wonderful opportunity to work with a great bunch of people who had such endless energy and willingness to volunteer wherever they were needed. Thanks everyone!! |

National Volunteer Week - May 2011. Once again the Volunteer of the Year Awards this year saw many worthy recipients. Joan Cadman, President of Cairns Meals on Wheels was chosen as the 2011 Volunteer of the Year for her commitment to this wonderful community service and her dedication to ensuring that older citizens are provided with healthy and hearty meals. The runner-up for the 2011 awards was Irwin Reid, nominated by Mareeba Information and Support Centre and chosen for his commitment and dedication to his role as a transport driver safely transporting vulnerable clients to hospital and doctor appointments in Cairns. All nominees were worthy of recognition for their volunteer work in the community.
National Volunteer Week is an opportunity for the not-for-profit sector to acknowledge and recognise the wonderful contribution that volunteers continue to make in our communities. FNQ Volunteers thanks Port Douglas and Mossman Neighbourhood Centres, Tully Support Centre and Community Services Tablelands who all hosted a morning tea in their community.
Thanks also go to our sponsors, Westpac, and supporters, Rydges Tradewinds and local MPs, Warren Entsch (Member for Leichhardt), Bob Katter (Member for Kennedy) and Senator Jan McLucas for their assistance in providing certificates signed by the Prime Minister for all nominees. |

Cyclone Yasi - February. FNQ Volunteers worked in partnership with Cairns Regional Council linking volunteers to help residents in the Babinda area, SES with volunteers in Mission Beach, Tully, Tully Heads and Cardwell and Rotary at Mission Beach with vegetation and debris removal. In total, FNQ Volunteers responded to over 300 calls to volunteer and connected 200 registered volunteers to help in the clean up. The community of Silkwood involved over 500 volunteers in one weekend to help residents clean up; a remarkable effort coordinated by a few community members, as was the fantastic effort of Rotary in involving teams of volunteers in the clean up of Mission Beach each weekend for the past four weeks. Also, the Tablelands Quad Bike Club, who coordinated over 60 of their members in the clean up at Tully and Mission Beach. Many thanks to crew members of the US Blue Ridge who also assisted with the clean up in Mission Beach. To the hundreds of volunteers who registered with FNQ Volunteers or who have been involved with other community agencies and service clubs, we say a great big THANK YOU! |
