Requirements for Some Volunteer Positions

Just as in a paid role, there are certain skills, knowledge and attributes that a volunteer will need for their volunteer role. Some are generic skills that are needed no matter what the position; others are more specific to a particular role or activity.

Volunteers work with non-profit organisations that operate in many areas of society.
They can include charities, clubs, societies and associations. Some volunteer positions may require b
ackground checking including criminal records checks. These checks are routinely used by community organisations to screen many potential volunteers for suitability in volunteer roles. This is particularly the case where people volunteer with 'vulnerable' groups such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, or in roles that have financial or driving responsibilities.

Other positions may have an age limit or require a young volunteer to be accompanied by an adult.

The following information sheets have been developed by FNQ Volunteers and Volunteering Australia provide guidance to volunteers on:

Spontaneous Volunteering - Volunteering during a natural disaster

FNQ Volunteers Inc. has an obligation with the Australian Government to ensure that information is provided to the community about volunteering in the event of a natural disaster eg; cyclone or flood and, that any involvement of spontaneous/community volunteers is coordinated in a safe manner and responsive to meet community needs.

Any offer to volunteer during a natural disaster in FNQ will be registered with FNQ Volunteers and provided to local or regional emergency or community agencies that require additional volunteer and sregisters their volunteer positions. The volunteer's details will be provided to them to contact the volunteer directly. If registered volunteers are not contacted by the organisation this may mean that emergency or community agencies do not require additional volunteers at the time. FNQ Volunteers takes all reasonable care and attention during an emergency event to ensure that communication on volunteering is based on the following principles:

· That people affected by any emergency are the first priority
